Before motion control became part of smartphones, game controllers, and wearables, the inertial measurement unit began with a much more serious challenge: could a machine understand its own movement without relying on external signals?
Early IMUs combined accelerometers and gyroscopes to measure motion, rotation, and orientation. Developed for military navigation and later used in the Apollo program, they showed that machines could track movement independently and respond to changes in direction.
Over time, smaller MEMS sensors brought IMUs into phones, drones, fitness trackers, VR systems, and game controllers. Motion became a form of digital input, allowing users to tilt, rotate, and move devices instead of relying only on buttons.
From there, the story moves toward more precise forms of interaction that combine motion with muscle and neural signals. It is a short look at how technology created for navigation became a familiar part of how we control digital devices.
