The Trackball - Input Origins #15

Before the mouse became the standard tool for pointing and clicking, the trackball had already introduced cursor control. Developed for military radar systems in the 1940s, it allowed operators to move a pointer by rotating a ball instead of pushing a device across a surface.


The trackball later moved into air traffic control, arcade games, personal computers, and professional design tools. It offered precise movement without requiring much desk space, but the cheaper and more familiar mouse eventually became the dominant choice.


Today, trackballs remain common in aviation, marine navigation, and specialized applications. Their story shows how one input paradigm can survive through different devices, while new approaches such as gesture and neural input explore how we may control spatial interfaces next.
